Our third build party had us doing assembly. It was very exciting to see things finally coming together.
Tack-welding the prototype turned out to be ugly, dangerous (the galvanized sheet metal gives off noxious fumes when welded), and very difficult -- so we decided to use aluminium rivets to attach them to the base rings. Notice how much cleaner the rivets look in the top pawn compared to the welds on the bottom one.
Assembly required no fewer than 3 sets of hands: two to hold things in place and one person to drill & rivet.
Just...put...down...the...gun...Amy!
We were able to assemble about 3 pieces per hour. Here we are with 14 out of 28 sheet metal bodies completed.
