Here are some early sketches that Marianna did. These really help give an idea of what we're trying to accomplish with the set. We originally had hoped to use fire in the pieces, but time and safety constraints (can you imagine picking up a flaming steel chess piece?) have forced us to use electronic lighting instead. The "bodies" of the pieces are all conical -- sheet metal wrapped around steel tubing bent into rings. This shape allows the pieces to stack for transport and also minimizes the amount fabrication work.
